Kiln currently supports:

  • Windows 2003 Server SP2 or later, Windows 2008 Server, and Windows 2008 Server R2 (sorry; Itanium not supported)
  • Microsoft SQL Server with Full-Text Search (2005, 2008, or 2008 Express)
  • Microsoft IIS 6.0 and later
  • 2 GB RAM Minimum; 8 GB RAM Recommended
  • Running Kiln or the FogBugz/Kiln bundle in a virtual machine is not supported. Since Kiln is an extremely disk-heavy application, performance will suffer! See Can I run Kiln in a VM / Virtual Machine? for more details.
  • The KilnRepositories folder requires a physical disk (not a network share)

Note that Kiln cannot currently be installed on a Primary Domain Controller.

How much does performance suffer in a VM installation? We only have like 10 users that are actively accessing the repositories we have in SVN now. – JayR Jul 19 at 16:47
I can't give you a quantitative answer, but we do not recommend running Kiln in a VM – adambox Jul 20 at 14:25
I missed the VM bit before setting it up in a VM, and I've been getting random errors when doing larger pushes and pushes that involve multiple subrepos. Currently looking into finding some more hardware. – Daniel Schaffer Aug 17 at 20:12
Is Windows 7 supported as a host? – osolo Jan 9 at 17:00
Is all of the data stored in MS SQL, or is the actual Mercurial data stored on the file system and just metadata or Kiln-specific stuff in SQL? – Jason Kochel Jan 24 at 17:45

I would like to reask this question, is it still true for the next version of kiln ? I remember reading in the Kiln Blog that you optimized disk access pattern to reduce by 75% and I have to admit running services in a VM is very attractive.

We reduced database access by 75%, but that does not mean we reduced disk access by 75%. We still do not encourage running Kiln in a virtual machine. – Benjamin Pollack Aug 2 at 18:17
